The four day Congress which brings Politicians, Government Officials, Medical Experts, Academics, People Living with HIV/ AIDS, Community Workers, Media & Young Peopl together, is set to discuss a wide range of issues with regard to this epidemic, which is confronting this region. More than three thousand delegates from all over sixty countries in Asia & the Pacific are expected to come together in Colombo for the ICAAP to be held at the BMICH from the 19 to the 23 August 2007. It will be the biggest ever conference on medical and health issues to be held in Sri Lanka in recent times.
With seven Congresses held so far from the inaugural summit in Canberra, Australia (1990), Delhi, India (1993), Chiang Mai, Thailand (1995), Manila, Philippines (1997), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1999). Melbourne, Australia (2001), Kobe, Japan (2005), the eight venue, Colombo, Sri Lanka (2007), is the occasion where a high level summit on this topic is taking place in a low prevalence country.
The 8th ICAAP aims to provide a favourable setting which embraces dialogue and analysis of HIV/ AIDS. It will be a crutial event in our global, regional and indeed, local movement in response to AIDS.It would be an oppertunity when concerned individuals from within and outside of the region rededicated ourselves to arrest the further spread of HIV/ AIDS and to care more effectively for the millions of men, women and children, presently affected with the virus.
The theme for the 8th ICAAP is “aves of Change, Waves of Hope”. We feel that this theme represents our collective regional commitment to address and overcome the many challenges of HIV/ AIDS. the people of our region will do so in ways similar to how we faced and triumphed, over the adversities of the Tsunami in December 2004.
The Congress is hosted by the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka with the support of UNAIDS, UNAgencies based in Colombo, and a string of NGOs and Community based workers. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) is jointly chaired by Desamanya Mr. Bradman Weerakoon, Desamanya Prof. A H Sherrifdeen and Dr. (Mrs) Sujatha Samarakoon.
